The test, sorted

Seven test centres in Dublin. We know the roads around all of them.

Most learners think the test is luck on the day. Actually, it is the route, and in Dublin no two centres are alike. Finglas passed just 38.6% of car tests in 2023 and Tallaght 46.2%, both below the 52.3% national average (RSA figures). Dun Laoghaire came out highest at 53.2%. We match you with an instructor who teaches on the roads of your centre.

Tallaght

Premier Business Park, 52 Broomhill Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24
D24 VE8E
Covers: Tallaght, Clondalkin, Templeogue, Rathfarnham, Firhouse, Knocklyon, Crumlin, Walkinstown and the wider south-west of the county
Pass rate: 46.2% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), below the 52.3% national average
The roads: the Belgard Road roundabout by Tallaght Hospital catches people out, and the N81 runs right by, so you need to be comfortable joining and leaving a fast dual carriageway. Routes drop into quiet estates around Tymon North and Kilnamanagh, then back onto Greenhills Road and Tallaght Village.

Finglas

Block 3/5, Jamestown Business Park, Jamestown Road, Finglas, Dublin 11
D11 TDE9
Covers: Finglas, Glasnevin, Cabra, Ballymun, Phibsboro and much of the north city, plus Swords and Balbriggan further out
Pass rate: 38.6% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), well below the 52.3% national average
The roads: one of the busiest centres in the county, so you will meet real traffic, buses and pedestrian crossings, not an empty road. Routes run the Finglas Road and through the village, where lane discipline gets tested, then onto tight streets off Cardiffsbridge Road with parked cars cutting your sightlines.

Raheny

4 All Saints Park, Raheny, Dublin 5
D05 HH42
Covers: Raheny, Coolock, Artane, Harmonstown, Kilbarrack, Donaghmede, Malahide, Portmarnock, Howth, Sutton and the north coast out to Rush and Skerries
Pass rate: 47.5% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), below the 52.3% national average
The roads: the Howth Road is the backbone of nearly every route here, in traffic, with bus lanes that change by the hour. Routes use Watermill Road, Station Road, Kilbarrack Road and the Coast Road, with the reverse and turnabout often set on side roads around Greendale and Grange.

Killester

St. Brigid's Parish Resource Centre, 306 Howth Road, Killester, Dublin 5
D05 FF96
Covers: Killester, Clontarf, Fairview, Marino, Beaumont, Santry, Donnycarney, Drumcondra, East Wall and the inner northside down to Ranelagh and Rathmines
Pass rate: 47.3% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), below the 52.3% national average
The roads: you are in real traffic from the off. The Howth Road and Clontarf Road carry heavy traffic and bus lanes, while side streets are narrow with on-street parking. Vernon Avenue, Collins Avenue and the Malahide Road bring busy junctions and multi-lane lights, with cycle lanes everywhere on the main roads.

Dun Laoghaire / Deansgrange

Highline Building, Bakers Point, Pottery Road, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin
A96 KW29
Covers: Dun Laoghaire, Deansgrange, Blackrock, Stillorgan, Dalkey, Glenageary, Sallynoggin, Foxrock, Cabinteely, Dundrum, Sandyford and the wider south-east
Pass rate: 53.2% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), above the 52.3% national average
The roads: a suburban test, heavy on housing estates and roundabouts. The Graduate roundabout is a named feature and Bakers Corner is one of the spots where people lose marks. Rochestown Avenue, Glenageary Road and the run towards the N11 mean you handle both tight junctions and faster roads.

Mulhuddart

Old Navan Road, Damastown, Mulhuddart, Dublin 15
D15 XHP3
Covers: Mulhuddart, Blanchardstown, Castleknock, Clonsilla, Clonee, Tyrrelstown, Lucan and the west of the county
Pass rate: 45.3% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), below the 52.3% national average
The roads: routes use the Old Navan Road and Damastown Road into the estates around Tyrrelstown and Mulhuddart village. The Damastown industrial estate carries heavy traffic, with more HGV activity on morning tests. You can be brought onto the N3, a 100km/h road, so practise merging on and off it.

Mulhuddart (Maple House)

Maple House, Rosemount Business Park, Ballycoolin, Dublin 11
D11 RPE8
Covers: Ashtown, Corduff, Blanchardstown and the surrounding Dublin 11 and Dublin 15 area
Pass rate: 44.1% in 2023 (RSA, car tests), below the 52.3% national average
The roads: the second Mulhuddart centre, run from Rosemount Business Park off Ballycoolin Road. Routes mix industrial estates, residential areas, roundabouts and the Blanchardstown Shopping Centre area. The N3 features, so you need to be steady joining and leaving a fast road, with manoeuvres set in the quieter estates around Sheepmoor and Fort Lawn.

Why learn here with us

Dublin roads, taught by local instructors.

Most people pick a driving school on price, then get a stranger who does not know their routes. In Dublin that is a real problem, because the county has seven car test centres and no two are alike. The Howth Road out of Raheny is nothing like the Belgard Road roundabouts out of Tallaght. Knowing which centre you will sit, and the roads around it, is half the test.

Dublin is the hardest place in the country to learn, and the pass rates show it. Finglas sat at 38.6% in 2023 and Tallaght at 46.2%, both below the 52.3% national average. That is not bad luck. It is bus lanes that change by the hour, the radial roads choked by M50 traffic, the quays, and junction after junction. The M50 itself is off limits to learners, so you will not sit it on the test, but you will learn the roads around it. You do not beat Dublin by hoping. You beat it by practising the real thing.

So we keep it local. Your instructor, your roads, your nearest test centre. You learn the roundabouts you will meet on the day and the manoeuvres in the estates the examiners actually use. Tell us your area and we will line you up.

The roads that catch people out

  • M50The C-shaped ring road and the busiest motorway in the country, with the West-Link toll between Junction 6 at Blanchardstown and Junction 7 at Lucan. Learners are not allowed on it and the test never goes near it, so the M50 is strictly for after you pass. Your lessons stay on the roads around your test centre.
  • N-roadsThe big routes fan out from the ring: the N7 at the Red Cow, the N3 to Navan, the N4 to Lucan, the N81 by Tallaght and the N11 south. Merging onto a fast road is a real test skill here.
  • Port TunnelA 4.5km tunnel linking the port to the M1 and M50, built to take lorries off the city streets. It is motorway-grade and joins two motorways, so it is not part of learning to drive and the test never uses it. One less thing to worry about.
  • City trafficStop-start driving: bus lanes that change by the hour, cycle lanes, Luas tracks, quays and constant junctions. The northside centres put you straight into it.

Dublin questions

The things people ask us about Dublin.

Which test centre will I be sent to in Dublin?

It depends on where you live. The county has seven car test centres: Tallaght, Finglas, Raheny, Killester, Dun Laoghaire/Deansgrange, Mulhuddart and Mulhuddart Maple House. As a rough guide the south-west sits Tallaght, the north city sits Finglas, the north coast sits Raheny, the inner northside sits Killester, the south-east sits Dun Laoghaire and the west sits Mulhuddart. Tell us your area and we will tell you your likely centre and teach you those roads.

Do you cover the south side as well as the north side?

Yes, the whole county. From Dalkey, Blackrock and Dun Laoghaire in the south-east to Swords, Malahide and Balbriggan in the north, out west to Lucan and Blanchardstown, and across the city. Wherever you are, we will line you up with a local instructor on your roads.

How many lessons will I need?

Every learner has to do the twelve EDT lessons by law if you are on a first learner permit. Beyond that it is down to you: how much you practise between lessons and how much road time you already have. Some people are ready after the twelve, plenty want a few more, especially in Dublin traffic. Your instructor will give you a straight answer once they see you drive.

Can I learn in an automatic?

Yes. We teach both manual and automatic. One thing to know: if you pass your test in an automatic, your licence is for automatics only. Pass in a manual and you can drive both. If you are not sure which suits you, ask your instructor on the first lesson and they will talk it through.
