Carlow is one county, one test centre, and the route runs over the same Graiguecullen Bridge every day
Learn the actual roads the examiner uses out of Church Street: the bridge over the Barrow, the Centaur Street hill start, the N80 merge. Local instructor, your roads, no payment now.
Your test is in Graiguecullen. We know the routes.
The Carlow centre passed 60.0% of car tests in 2023, comfortably above the 52.3% national average (RSA figures). Most learners think the test is luck on the day. Actually, it is the route, and in Carlow that means one bridge and two hill starts. Get the crossing over the Barrow and the Centaur Street climb right, and you have cleared the parts that catch most people.

Carlow roads, taught by local instructors.
Most people think passing is down to luck on the day. In Carlow it is down to knowing one bridge and two hill starts. The test centre sits in Graiguecullen, on the west bank of the River Barrow, and nearly every route crosses the narrow Graiguecullen Bridge into the town centre. Get that crossing and the Centaur Street climb onto Dublin Street right, and you have cleared the parts that catch most learners.
Carlow is a small county with a lot packed into the test. One run can take you over a river bridge, through busy town-centre streets with pedestrian crossings, out onto the N80 to merge with faster traffic, and back through quiet residential estates for your manoeuvres. The pass rate at the Carlow centre was 60.0% in 2023, comfortably above the 52.3% national average, and the examiner still marks the basics every time.
We cover the whole county, from Tullow and Hacketstown in the north to Borris and St Mullins in the south. Your instructor comes to your door, and the long roads in, the N81 from Tullow, the R448 from Muine Bheag, double as the warm-up into Carlow. Local roads, local instructor, local test centre.
The roads you will learn on
- N80The main national road through the county, north-east toward Kildare and south toward Bunclody and Wexford. It comes up on test, so be comfortable merging with faster traffic.
- N9 / M9The Dublin to Waterford corridor runs along the western edge and bypasses the town. The M9 motorway is off limits until you pass your test, so your lessons and the test itself stay on the town roads and the regional roads around them.
- N81Runs through Tullow in the north and on toward Wicklow. The narrow bridge over the Slaney in Tullow town centre is the part most local learners practise first.
- R448The old N9 spine through the middle of the county, linking Carlow town to Leighlinbridge and Muine Bheag. The working approach road for most south Carlow learners.

The things people ask us about Carlow.
Where will I sit my driving test in Carlow?
At the Carlow centre on Church Street, Graiguecullen, R93 T3H1, just across the River Barrow from the town centre. There is a second venue at the Carlow Talbot Hotel on the Portlaoise Road. Both run the same roads, so the practice carries over either way.
Do you cover north Carlow and the Tullow side?
Yes. We cover the whole county, Tullow, Rathvilly, Hacketstown and the villages around them included. Your instructor travels to you, and the N81 run west into Carlow doubles as part of the lesson. We also cover the south, from Muine Bheag and Borris down to St Mullins.
How many lessons will I actually need?
The full EDT course is twelve lessons, and that is what most first-time learners take before the test. Some who have driven a little need fewer top-up hours. You keep the same instructor across all twelve, so the second hour picks up where the first one stopped. We will tell you straight after the first lesson where you stand.
Can I learn in an automatic in Carlow?
Yes. We run automatic lessons out of the same Carlow base, on the same roads, the bridge over the Barrow, the town-centre streets, the N80. Worth knowing: an automatic test gives you an automatic-only licence. If you want to drive a manual later you would sit the test again. Tell us which suits you and we will sort it.
Your Carlow instructor is a two-minute form away.
No payment now. Pick your town, and we will route you to a local instructor who knows the Graiguecullen test.
